Pharmacy medical sales needs improving

Research by 'which' has brought into question the quality of medical sales in pharmacies in the UK.

Many patients rely on pharmacies for advice and treatment, perhaps in some cases as a first line before a visit to a GP.  As a result, pharmacy staff need to ensure they not only give sound advice but also recognise when patients need to be referred to a GP.

One reporter manage to buy 160 paracetamol even though it is illegal to buy more than 100 without a prescription.  In 40% of cases assistants did not alert the pharmacist and one in five was sold something without a single question being asked.

Other researchers posed as having travel sickness, in many cases patients weren't asked whether they had been abroad or how long they had been suffering, essential questions for any over the counter medical sales.

The Royal Pharmaceutical society of Great Britain has pledged it will investigate and put measures in place to improve matters.
