Medical sales of statins now over the counter
Statins, the blockbuster drugs for cholesterol lowering are now available for over the counter sales.
Medical sales companies have had years of battles with the government's NICE organisation. Statins had been shown to offer huge reductions in heart attacks to patients with cardiovascular risk factors. Unfortunately the cost implications of all patients in these groups receiving them were just too great resulting in restricted usage patterns in the UK, limiting the medical sales potential of these drugs as well as presenting issues for patients health.
Statins have now been made available over the counter at £17 per pack, meaning patients can self medicate a reduce their chances of a heart attack for £17 per month. The move represents a partial privatisation of an area of medicine that the government and NHS otherwise couldn't afford. It also represents an additional opportunity for medical sales companies to extend their revenue generation for products which have been some of the biggest in the last decade.
