International medical graduates to stay

Ina ruling by the House of Lords 1000s of international medical graduates will be allowed to stay in the UK.

There are 1000s of international medical graduates in the UK, many under the highly skilled migrants scheme.  The situation arose as a result of health secretary Patricia Hewitt advising training schemes to only take international graduates if there were no domestic graduates available.

The news will be welcomed by some 8000 international medical graduates in the UK.  It will also be bad news for many domestic graduates who will now find themselves competing against many others for training positions which were previously poorly supplied.  At the end of this summer it is likely that many UK medical graduates will no find themselves without a position.

The highly skilled migrant program that has brought many international graduates to the UK will be reduced, but only gradually which will be of little compensation to those who loose out this year.
